Why We Relay: Advocacy and the Fight Against Cancer

At Relay For Life Wexford, we come together to honour cancer survivors, support those currently fighting, and remember those we've lost. But we also come together to make a difference—beyond raising funds for research and services, we aim to create a future without cancer through advocacy. The Irish Cancer Society plays a critical role in this mission, ensuring that cancer patients receive the best care and support at every stage of their journey.

What is Advocacy?
Advocacy involves working with the government at all levels to ensure that cancer patients, survivors, families, and caregivers receive the care and support they need. It’s about giving a voice to those affected by cancer and driving policy changes that can save lives.

An Independent Voice
As Ireland's national cancer charity, the Irish Cancer Society serves as an independent and informed voice. Receiving only 3% of its funding from the State, the Society can freely represent the interests of people affected by cancer without external influence. This independence allows the Society to work with policymakers, civil servants, and elected representatives to advocate for better cancer care, prevention, and support systems.

How Does the Irish Cancer Society Advocate for Cancer Issues?
The Irish Cancer Society raises awareness of cancer-related issues and campaigns for policies and legislation that can improve the lives of people with cancer. By regularly engaging with government representatives, the Society ensures that the voices of those impacted by cancer are heard. The Society's ongoing communication with cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, and researchers provides a deep understanding of the issues, allowing it to make informed recommendations for change.

Examples of Advocacy Successes
The Irish Cancer Society's advocacy efforts have led to significant changes in public health policy. Here are some notable successes:

  •  Workplace Smoking Ban: A groundbreaking measure that has reduced the risks associated with second-hand smoke.
  • Warning Images on Cigarette Packs: A step towards discouraging smoking and raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use.
  • Bowel Cancer Screening: The introduction of a nationwide screening program, which has the potential to save thousands of lives through early detection.
  • Breast Cancer Screening Extension: A commitment from the government to extend the age range for breast cancer screening, ensuring broader coverage for early detection.
  • Sunbed Regulation: Cross-party support for regulating sunbed use, a critical step in reducing skin cancer risk.

Why Advocacy Matters
Advocacy is about more than policy changes; it's about ensuring that cancer patients receive the best possible care and support. By participating in Relay For Life Wexford, you're not only funding research and services but also supporting the advocacy work that shapes the future of cancer care in Ireland.

Thank you for being part of our Relay For Life community. Together, we're making a difference and moving closer to a future without cancer. Let's keep raising our voices and fighting for the change that saves lives.
